Conceptual Art

The idea is the medium a photograph that asks more questions than it answers. Read the artist statement before loading the camera every framing decision should be accountable to the concept; beautiful images that misrepresent the idea are worse than ugly images that document it accurately

Capture: Portrait of the artist mid-action of a durational performance, documentation-style wide frame; Flat-lay of text, objects, and found materials that together constitute the work; Environmental shot where the subject's presence changes the meaning of the space; Close detail of an instruction card or text element that functions as both artwork and key to the image; Empty room where the work has already happened, the trace or residue the only evidence.

Documentation lighting even, neutral, not dramatic; the conceptual artist's enemy is the aestheticization of an idea, and heroic lighting does exactly that

Good locations include: White cube gallery space, Site-specific outdoor location relevant to the concept, Archive or storage space with institutional quality, Non-art space transformed by the presence of the work.

Neutral, recessive, in service to the concept; the artist should not visually compete with the work they are presenting
